Open pedagogy: Leveraging YouTube to extend learning
Faculty Spotlight on Dr. Anthony Deese, Professor and Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at TCNJ
With over 61,000 views and hundreds of YouTube channel subscribers worldwide, Dr. Anthony Deese of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department shares his expertise within and beyond TCNJ.
Anthony’s YouTube videos such as “Solving More Complex Circuits,” “Introduction to XBee Technology,” and “API Gateway for Amazon Web Services” distill complex electrical engineering concepts and often offer downloadable supplemental learning materials.
Inspired by his personal experience using YouTube resources for research, Anthony believes that producing and sharing free high-quality educational content online is crucial for contributing to global learning communities. He notes that students from developing countries without access to formal higher-level education can use these videos to enter STEM fields. YouTube also allows Anthony to highlight the high-quality education happening at TCNJ and publicize this work to potential students from around the world.
Reflecting on his motivation for using YouTube to teach concepts in electrical engineering, Anthony said, “Overall, I enjoy teaching and I believe these YouTube videos provide a unique opportunity to showcase those skills to larger audiences in a more permanent way than simply giving guest lectures.”
For TCNJ students, the videos are a powerful supplement to class lectures and discussions, and offer opportunities to review challenging concepts. We invite you to explore Professor Deese’s YouTube Channel and comment with your ideas for using YouTube as a meaningful space for educational videos, open resource sharing, and building online learning communities.
